Keith Shows Us a "Classy" Yankees Fan's Ride

From his MLBlog "Baseball Nerd":

A poster gave the real reason:
"There was a play running off-Broadway (and later elsewhere in the country) a couple of years ago called '27 Heaven', based on the imagined conversations in heaven of some of the members of 'The 27 Club' (famous rock stars dying at age 27): Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain. While pulling the car out of mothballs and parking it may be some kind of statement, at least the paint job is explained."
As far as the coffin goes, Stay Classy Yankees Douchenozzle Fans.  Phillies fans would never stoop to such lows.

The Maigc of macy*s Helps The Phils Accidentally

What was on the back page of the news section in the Monday (11/2) edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer you ask?

An ad from macy*s congratulating the Phils on winning their second World Series title, complete with a T-shirt to be worn in the clubhouse (overpriced BTW) when the champagne (Chateau Deer Patch vintage 1977) is sprayed around.

The Inquirer apologised for the goof, but hey, there's at least one wish: The Phils win the next two games.

Cliff Lee: A Man Among Men

Cliff Lee toyed with the New York Yankees tonight (10/28).  Complete game, ten Ks, surrendering six hits and an unearned run, and Chase Utley delivered two Ruthian blasts off "Oh see" C.C. Sabathia and the Phillies rolled 6-1.

One down, three to go.  Game 2 tomorrow (10/29) with Pedro Martinez facing a Phillies target in A.J. Burnett.  Much to Keith's chagrin oh by the way...

A Rainout, No Live Blog and Nothing Else To See...Move Along...

All righty, two quick notes for you:

  1. Game Six of the 2009 ALCS has been postponed until tomorrow (10/25) at 8:20 PM US EDT becuase of heavy rains, a thunderstorm and high winds.  The same stuff I get here in Philadelphia.  If a seventh game is needed, that would be Monday (10/26) at 7:55 PM US EDT.
  2. No NFL live blog for us (JFein, Keith, et al) this week.  Mookie, like his Seahawks, decided to take a bye week, so may we suggest a visit to the new site being assisted by those at Awful Announcing, 12stepdrop.com for you live blogging needs.
Other than that, nothing to see, please move along.  Other than that, the Football Night in America live blog for tomorrow is still on.

The Path To Another Championship Is Underway

"Lidge looks in for the sign...the 1-2 pitch...FASTBALL, FLY BALL HIT TO CENTER FIELD, VICTORINO IS UNDER IT...HE SQUEEZES IT AND MAKES THE CATCH!  THE WINNERS OF THE 2009 LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES AND STILL THE NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES!!!"

Okay...who's next?  A-R*id, Derek Jeter, and The Best Team Money Can Buy, The George Steinbrenner Still In Charge Even Though He's Not Really Doing So New York Yankees? (Oh, the dilemma of having to root against Keith's team.)  Or the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Orange County California USA Western Hemisphere Third Rock From The Sun Milky Way Crab Nebula?  That will be decided as early as tonight (10/22) in Angel Stadium or no later than Sunday (10/25) should the series go the full metal jacket seven games.  And man, Fox and the NFL look like fricking geniuses now.  Swapping out Minnesota-Green Bay Judas Bowl II and Giants-Eagles in their time slots (1 PM and 4:15 PM) .  BRILLIANT!  Of course, I won't be watching the latter for obvious reasons.  For Pirate Rupert's sports division, this could be the biggest ratings bonanza since acquiring MLB in 1996 and the NFL two years earlier.

I digress though, as Jayson Werth (as I said at the Fire Andy Reid Now live blog "He's due") hit two home runs, Pedro "Pete Happy: Good field, no hit" Feliz and Shane-O Vic added homers of their own and the Dodgers were dead after that, 10-4.  See you at FARN next Wednesday (10/28)!

Stay Classy, The Jackass Slimeball

T. J. Simers of the Los Angeles Times is a living, breathing mother fucking jagoff douchebag jackass in the vein of Comedian Boss Limbaugh if he had brains.  He hates Philadelphia for no reason whatsoever in the vein of W.C. Fields.  And Fields was actually a native Philadelphian.

Don't believe me?  Here's his comments about the Phillie Phanatic the last two nights, plus a cheap shot at not only our fans, but also those of the Yankees:

"Nowhere in America are people more angry than those living here. During Game 3 they had their humorless furry mascot put on boxing gloves and take on someone who was supposed to be an L.A. fan, sunglasses, cellphone and all.

"The furry mascot punched him out, much to the delight of the folks here who love a dash of violence with their sports entertainment.

"During Game 4 the furry mascot took a small Dodgers blue helmet, placed it on the ground and then pulverized it, much to the delight of the locals. Same tired skits, by the way, they employed a year ago.

"But this is considered entertainment here, the only bright spot if they draw the Yankees now, getting a look in the mirror at fans who might remind them of themselves."

Send a long FUCKYOUDOUCHEBAG to t.j.simers@latimes.com for all of us, and Stay Classy, you fucktard.

Quoting Harry The K, "CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?!"

Broxton looks in for the sign, the 1-1 pitch... SWING AND A LINE DRIVE INTO RIGHT FIELD, IT'S A GAPPER ROLLING ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE WALL! HERE COMES BRUNTLETT, HE WILL SCORE, HERE COMES RUIZ SLIDING IN AND THIS GAME IS OVER!!!  THE PHILLIES HAVE COME FROM BEHIND TO WIN GAME FOUR OF THE 2009 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES, 5-4 ON A DOUBLE BY JIMMY ROLLINS!  AND J-ROLL, YOU ARE THE MAN TONIGHT!  OH, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!

Hard to believe, Harry, but for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and especially for Jonathon Broxton, it was another case of "Deja Vu All Over Again."  One year ago in Chavez Ravine, Matt Stairs hammered one of his 100 MPH fastballs into the right field pavillion and the Phils won.  Flash forward to tonight (10/19).  After Pete Happy (Pedro Feliz) had made an throwing error, his two-for-the-series batting earned him a replacement as pinch hitter by Mr. Stairs.  He walked on four pitches, and was replaced by Eric "Unassisted Triple Play" Bruntlett as a pinch runner at first.  Then "Senor Ocutbre", Carlos Ruiz was plunked on the next pitch.  After pinch hitter Greg Dobbs (for winning pitcher Brad Lidge - that's right his first win this year) struck out, Rollins delivered big time.

Three down, one more.  Like I say, we have them right where we want them.  And Cole Hamels will try for the kill Wednesday (10/21).  By the way, here's what MLB.com had on their homepage BEFORE JRoll's win, just call it an EPIC DODGER FAIL!

By the way, all credit where credit is due to Chris Creamer's Sports Logo Boards for the pic.

Clocks Go Back an Hour 11/1, Four NFL Games Swap Times?

Lost in the shuffle of yesterday's (10/12) NLDS win was the avoidance of a mess at The Financial District (also known as the Sports Complex due to the connections of the facility sponsors - Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Field and the Wachovia Center, soon to be renamed the Wells Fargo Spectrum) if and when the Phillies beat the Dodgers.

The Eagles game against the Giants has been swapped from its' original 4:15 PM kickoff to 1 PM.  In addition, three other games have their kickoff times changed.  Up in Northern New Jersey at Exit 16-W, the Miami Dolphins game at the New York Jets has been moved from 1 PM to 4:05 PM and Tennessee-Jacksonville will take BUF-NYJ's place in the 1 PM slot, while Judas Bowl II - the second round of the Vikings-Packers rivalry for a homecoming for Brett Favre on The Frozen Tundra of Lambeau FieldTM - has taken the Eagles' place on the slate.  FOX and Nashville winds up winners as they now have MIN-GB as the lead in for Game 4 of the Series and Music City now gets to see it.  New York, though, winds up as the loser as they still won't see Judas Bowl II, joining San Diego.

One Down, Two To Go...

Jayson Werth hit a game winning single in the top of the ninth inning to score Ryan Howard, who had done unto Hudson Street what others had done unto Brad Lidge, or in this case, Ryan Madson, when the Colorado Rockies had scored a three spot half an inning earlier, and the Phillies got their three in the top of the ninth as Lidge struck Troy Tulowitzki out on a 2-2 cutter and the Phillies will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2009 National League Championship Series after a 5-4 mile high win in Game 4 of the NLDS.

(Up in that great press box in the sky, Whitey said to his partner "Hard to believe, Harry, this game's easy!")

And now, it's time to...

BEATAGAIN!

If You Thought There Was Confusion With the Baseball Postseason Scheduling...

Here's what today's (10/11) schedule looks like:

  • Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Orange County California USA Western Hemisphere Third Rock from the Sun Milky Way Galaxy Crab Nebula at Boston, 12 noon ET
  • Yankees at Minnesota, 7 PM
  • Phillies at Rockies, 10 PM
If MLB had any sense, Yankees-Twins at 3 PM, Angels-Red Sox at 6:30, Phillies-Rockies at 10 PM.  We won't know the time for Game 4 of Phillies-Rockies tomorrow (10/12) but it will be announced after the finish of NYY-MIN, so if both LAA-BOS and NYY-MIN are sweeps, it's a 8:07 PM ET first pitch.  If one series continues, expect a 5:07 ET first pitch, and if there are two ALDS Game Fours, a 2:37 PM ET start for PHI-COL.  Either way, thwe road to repeat will go through Chavez Ravine as the Dodgers swept the Cardinals.

And the Weather Outside Will Be Frightful...

And could the photo to the right be not so delightful?  From AccuWeather:

Wintry conditions in Denver this weekend have potential to affect or even cancel Game 3 of the MLB National League Division Series.

At this time, AccuWeather.com is forecasting mostly cloudy skies with a high of 36 degrees for Saturday's match-up between the Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies.

By the 7:37 p.m. MDT start, temperatures will drop to 27 degrees with a chance of up to an inch of snow falling before the game.

While the postponement of MLB games due to low temperatures and snow is uncommon, it is not unheard of.

Postponements due to wintry conditions are most common in the early portion of the baseball season in cities located in the Northeast, Great Lakes and Midwest.

This season's Opening Day match-up on April 6 between the White Sox and Royals was a recent casualty after being canceled because of snow, cold temperatures and high winds.

Games can also be canceled due to just very low temperatures as well. An April 5, 2007, game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers was rescheduled after the day brought a high of only 31 degrees.

A "snow-out" at Coors Field last occurred on April 10, 2008, forcing a match-up with the Atlanta Braves to be rescheduled after a total of 1.6 inches fell. Another occurred in April 2007 when a series of Indians and Mariners games were canceled after 10 inches of snow pounded Jacobs Field in Cleveland.

The defending World Champion Phillies are no strangers to postponed playoff games. Last year's decisive Game 5 of the World Series was halted in the sixth inning due to rain. The final three innings were played out two days later.

Maybe Jolly Cholly has them right where they have 'em with the bullpen of Happ and Blanton...

Han Solo and His Friends Are Right...

"I've got a bad feeling about this."

In every Star Wars film, one of the main characters says that line at a point in peril.  The Phillies are in peril with their starting pitching in this NLDS against Colorado.  By wasting Joe Blanton and J.A. Happ in consecutive bullpen appearances in Game 2 today (10/8), the Phillies have now backed themselves into a corner with very bad feelings.

Pedro Martinez will now start Game 3 Saturday (10/10) in the sub-freezing cold of Coors Light Field, where the best of the Rockies is yours as Craig Kilborn said when he did SportsCenter before becoming a talk show host and actor, Sparky.  That corner is known as a three-man starting rotation, meaning Cliff Lee will start on three days rest after his monster performance in Game 1 yesterday (10/7) in a possible fourth game Sunday (10/11).  That is unless snow postpones one of the games, so Jolly Cholly better get AccuWeather on the phone, and fast.

OH HELL YEAH!

The Phillies didn't exactly back into the National League Eastern Division championship... Moments after the Marlins beat the Braves 5-4 on a walkoff pickoff, it was over as the Phillies beat the Astros, 10-3.  There were the fireworks, there were the overpriced authentic shirts and caps and the Chateau Deer Path vintage 1977.  Now it's on to the post season, and tomorrow night (10/1) will be the Iron Pigs of the Lehigh Valley with Cliff Lee on the mound.

Your TBS Division Series/NLCS Announcers Are...

Well, the postseason begins in one week, and TBS hasn't wasted tome on who they picked for the announcers and as Jim Lange used to say "Heeeeeeeeeerre they are!"

Tigers/Twins vs. Yankees - Chip Caray, Buck Martinez, Craig Sager

Angels vs. Red Sox - Don Orsillo, David Wells (and/or Dennis Eckereley), Marc Fein

Phillies vs. Rockies - Brian Anderson, Joe Simpson, David Aldridge

Dodgers vs. Cardinals - Dick Stockton, Ron Darling, Tom Verducci

NLCS - Caray, Martinez, Darling, Sager.

Geez, doen't anyone remember when Orsillo and Eck worked together?  Eck tossed out a couple accidental NSFW or Kids words.

Sorry, No Live Blog Tonight

Due to duties at FARN of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game live blog, there was no Counrdown live blog tonight (7/14). Nothing wrong with that mind you, but I'm hosting it because JFein is on a European Vacation the Grizwald family isn't taking. However, you can join me for a two-for-one Wednesday Live Blog Doubleheader of both Countdown and I Survived a Japanese Game Show tonight (7/15) starting at 8 PM US EDT.

Keith Olbermann Vs. Dan Steinberg: The Online Flame War!

(Cross-posted by JFein from Fire Andy Reid Now!)

I have been very serious in my criticizing and condemnation of Fox for doing a split-screen for Manny Ramirez's at-bats in his second game back from steroid suspension during the Muts-Phillies game on Saturday. And one of my main and favorite articles to read and site on this blog was Keith Olbermann's post on his MLBlog, The Baseball Nerd. Well, Dan Steinberg of The Sporting Blog responded and guess what folks, we have an epic flame war of hilarity!

If you've been around the block at all for the past few days, I am sure you have seen this post by now, but if not, here is the link to my post quoting Olbermann's blog on his indignation and outrage over Man-Ram. Just for the sake of space and redundancy, I won't bring up the block quote for a 3rd time (besides, most of what he says shows up in Steinberg's blockquote. Apparently Dan Steinberg read and got a hold of it and if you've ever watched Countdown with Keith Olbermann, after reading this quote, you'll understand what I mean when I say he Keith Olbermann'd Keith Olbermann. Here's Steinberg's response via his post on The Sporting Blog.

And so I ask, please, someone, anyone, give us a little outrage. What's that, Keith Olbermann? You have something to say?

"Let's take you out to San Diego where Manny Ramirez is just back from a 50-game suspension. For cheating. For cutting corners. For breaking rules. For lying. For deception. For letting down his teammates. For contributing to suspicions against every honest player. For raising a giant middle finger to sportsmanship. For abusing the fans. For risking that for which Lou Gehrig would've given anything -- his own health."

For sneaking boogers into ballpark pizza cheese. For publicly admitting he likes Tiramisu better than Apple Pie. For feeding rat poison to toddlers. For ruining America.

"Ramirez, of course, homered today in his first at bat. And some people cheered. As if he were just back from an injury, or a death in the family. As if he were a hero. As if he were an honest man. As if he were somehow worthy of sharing the meaningfulness of this day with Lou Gehrig."

As if he were worthy of being alive, Keith; of sharing the status of "human being" with Lou Gehrig. Manny Ramirez should have declined all offers of oxygen, on this day, and on every other day that is an anniversary of a day on which Lou Gehrig was alive.

"This is Lou Gehrig's day. The rest of the juicers may come back and play tomorrow and there will not be boycotts. The Dodgers will probably go to the World Series, carried in part by a great flaming fraud like Ramirez. And judging by the brainless response of fans who would cheer anybody if they hit the ball 425 feet for their team, and boo anybody if they hit the ball 425 feet for their opponents, there will not even be significant repercussions."

For shame, for shame, baseball fans. You should all be standing in line to forfeit your mindless baseball entertainment, on account of there having been rule-breaking in that industry, which is devoted primarily to occupying the minds of 30-something lawyers with expense accounts, middle-aged journalists and college kids making fictional "trades" at 3 in the morning while eating week-old pizza slices they found in their closets. Why, oh why, don't you brainless masses boycott this farce in favor of a more wholesome, ethical and Gehrig-approved entertainment option? Like, go check out MSNBC's "Oddball" video page. Current options include "Pig Parade Held in Philippines," "Monkey Pee Monkey Do," and "Woman Puts Squirrel in Tank Top." I know for a fact that Gehrig could not get enough of the squirrel inside the tank top bit. In fact, he used to regularly stuff ferrets into his underwear.

"Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez and the others of the PED era did not belong in baseball today, and that they did not show the requisite awareness of their own shame, only makes it worse. Lord, send us a 'roider who has the presence of mind to say: "On this day I do my penance; I don't yet belong on the field even with just the memory of this man, I hope you'll forgive me and I can again earn your trust."

Because, you know, the world would never have a cross word to say about a 'roider who completely upstaged Lou Gehrig Day with a self-centered stunt involving a self-righteous self-benching. No, that'd be just swell.

Anyhow, I would argue further: that no one not named Gehrig should ever again be allowed to play baseball, even Strat-O-Matic. And that Manny Ramirez should be tasered every night for a year. And that the fans who have cheered for him should be tasered, too. And that Manny Ramirez is, pretty much, the Worst Person in the World. And that anyone who so much as cashes one check paid for with dirty baseball money from immoral cheering fans should be banished from civilized society.

Wait, Keith, why is there an MLB logo on your blog? Nooooooooooooooooooooo!
I agree with what Keith Olbermann says on the matter, and yet, this criticism from Steinberg is cleverly written and brillantly hilarious. He uses pretty much every tool in the book that Keith Olbermann utilizes in his Special Comments and uses them against him in a sarcastic way that is pure hilarity!

But wait! This flame war gets even better! KEITH OLBERMANN ACTUALLY RESPONDED!!!! Via Keith Olbermann's MLBlog, The Baseball Nerd.

I hadn't heard previously of Dan Steinberg and his blogs at The Washington Post and The Sporting News, but he goes a long way to defend Manny Ramirez and skewer me for what I wrote here Saturday (I think that's what he's doing - it's not exactly clear; it seems to be snark, a medium in which I've worked for 35 years, and whatever it is, I think he's doing it wrong). I criticized the juxtaposition of Fox's celebration of Ramirez's return and the MLB-wide official tributes to Lou Gehrig on the 70th Anniversary of his "day" at Yankee Stadium in 1939.

"As if he were worth of being alive, Keith; of sharing the status of "human being" with Lou Gehrig. Manny Ramirez should have declined all offers of oxygen, on this day, and on every other day that is an anniversary of a day on which Lou Gehrig was alive."

I confess to being mightily impressed at the head of steam he builds up on the long trek he makes towards his great climactic accusation of hypocrisy on my part.

"For shame, for shame, baseball fans. Why, oh why, don't you brainless masses boycott this farce in favor of a more wholesome, ethical and Gehrig-approved entertainment option?"

I also confess to becoming afraid for him as he accelerates, the way we all used to become afraid for the Coyote in the Roadrunner cartoons, since we could see the edge of the mesa coming and he couldn't.

"I would argue further: that no one not named Gehrig should ever again be allowed to play baseball, even Strat-O-Matic.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!"

Umm... as anybody who reads the MLBlogs knows, baseball has no say over what is written here, by me, or anybody else. And, yes, this particular blog, MLB pays for. Only I don't get checks to cash. The money gets split three ways: to St. Jude's Hospital, to the Baseball Assistance Team, and to the education fund for the grandchildren of the former big leaguer and MLB.TV host John Marzano.

That was a long way to run to wind up going off a cliff like that. At least Mr. Steinberg was good enough to provide his own sound effect at the end.
But wait! There's even more to this hilarity! If you click on the above link and look closely, Steinberg actually responded to Olbermann in the comments section!

Well, the final line was added after I had already finished, and I guess I'll agree that it gives the wrong impression. Although I didn't really think you got paid for doing this. The point was more that you are associated with the official apparatus of MLB, which has clearly been pretty well filled with cheaters of various degrees for a long, long time. Seems to me either you give up on an entire generation of baseball fans, or you just accept the fact that cheaters were everywhere and you move on with your life. When so many were cheating, to me, it's a systemic problem and not a sign of individual moral failing.

As for the rest of the slop quoted above, apologies for not just writing what I thought. Here's what I think: there are so very many problems in the world that deserve outrage, many of which you highlight on TV. Manny Ramirez sullying the image of a man who's been dead for decades by trying to hit a ball with a piece of wood on a day his employer told him he was eligible just doesn't strike me as one of them.

And if you want to say that being outraged about Manny is also a topic unworthy of outrage, I will concede the point.

As for never having heard of me, I was the fella who turned up Miles Rawls, the Wizards fan who taunted Prez Obama this spring. You quoted from my piece extensively, on the air! And I thought that made us bff!
If you're not laughing right now at either what Steinberg and/or Olbermann said or just at the fact that 2 grown men (one of them being a multi-million dollar TV star) are having an online flame war about something like this, then there's gotta be something wrong with you because this is great! Good times.....gooooooooooood times.

For a great discussion on this, listen to today's episode of On The DL.

A Perfectly Good Waste of Pepsi in Times Square

I already gave JFein the story and video which is up at Fire Andy Reid Now! However, this does bear retelling.

For decades, New York Yankees fans have had to refresh themselves with Cola-Cola products at the original Yankee Stadium, a/k/a The House That Ruth Built and Mayor Lindsey Rebuilt. Well, thanks to a new in-house catering project with them and the Dallas Cowboys, bringing themselves with another Evil Empire in all of sports akin to merging operations of The Joker, The Riddler, The Penguin and Catwoman, the team signed an agreement with Pepsi-Cola to have their drinks served at the new $1.2 billion (with a "B") House That Fat George Built, a/k/a New Yankee Stadium. Fast forward to yesterday (4/16) and Times Square, the center of the fricking universe (Sorry, Toronto.)

News spread about a giveaway for 250 pairs of tickets for the first regular season game at the brand new Money Hole to be held beneath Dick Clark's Big New Years' Eve Ball, plus other stuff as well. Sure enough, at 43rd and Broadway, there was a long line before the scheduled giveaway. However, security pointed the folks to another location three blocks away, and alas, there was no Opening Day tickets to be seen, and even Hall of Fame closer Goose Gossage had to briefly wave to the fans from a Pepsi-provided limo. So the fans screamed "Pepsi sucks!" and threw cans of Pepsi onto the ground in the gutter (in more ways than one) as well as other promotional paraphanalia. Finaly, tickets came, but there were only 100 pairs and they were for a midseason matchup against the Texas Rangers. A spokesperson for Pepsi said that there was a major mixup in communications.

I'm willing to bet that if Fat George was still running the team, he'd fire the guy in charge. George Constanza, was that your idea?

Keith Olbermann On The Death Of Harry Kalas

(Guest Posted by JFein From Fire Andy Reid Now!)

Here are Keith Olbermann's thoughts on the death of Harry Kalas from his MLBlog,
Baseball Nerd

T.S. Eliot wrote it, in an utterly different context:

April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

As much as all of us adhere to April as a time of rebirth in our shared game and the greater life it symbolizes, the month can just as easily take away, as give. Remember John McSherry? A wonderful man, that rarest of umpires beloved by players even if they thought he missed a call, dead on Opening Day in Cincinnati, dying as he prepared to do what he loved.

And this year, today, it's Harry Kalas, the gifted and unmistakable voice of the Phillies, who collapsed and died just before the team's game in Washington this afternoon. Of his endurance and wisdom and style, you probably knew - over nearly 45 seasons he had grown into the league of the Scullys.

But just as importantly, Harry had one of the best senses of humor about himself I've ever encountered. In the '90s at ESPN Radio, my Philly-based colleague Tony Bruno and I regularly lapsed into a bad impression of Harry, especially for names that were easily elongated. Harry never did, but as him, we could take the phrase "here's the two-two pitch to Mickey Morandini" and make it last fifteen seconds.

This, needless to say, bled into my narration of highlights on SportsCenter, after two or three years of which, I happened to draw as my only play-by-play assignment, an Astros-Phillies game at The Vet. Bruno came out with me to the ballpark and introduced me to Harry who immediately asked "So, Keith, how many innings of me are you going to?" He then laughed loudly and offered me any help I might need - volunteering, on the spot, a couple of tips on why the Phils would be resting some of their regulars.

I can also say, having known his son Todd, first of the Mets and now of the Rays, nearly as long as I knew Harry, that Harry must've been a pretty good parent, because Todd's as good a guy as you'd want to know.
RIP Harry The K.

EDIT: JFein will pinch hit for me for the next two Tuesdays (4/21 - hopefully a plausable live version - and 28) while I'm away at Phillies games. He would have done it last night (4/13) but Shuster pinch hit again. -JC

It's Over for Nova...And It's Starting For The WFC.

Villanova's "Cinderella" run ended last night in the most sloppily way possible.  Happening in the remants of the biggest audience to watch an NCAA National Semifinal doubleheader (many of whom were rooting for Michigan State, a three-hour drive away), The Cats fell to North Carolina to the tune of 83-69 before what was left of 72,456 fans.

What was the main cause? The three-point line was not friendly to Villanova, as it had been to previous UNC oppoents like Oklahoma, and Heel out trey'd the entire team.  The pressure defense didn't show up, and Carolina were in track meet mode all night long thanks to Tyler "Beaker" Hansbrough and that Lawson kid.  Still in all, the Cats have a Regional Championship trophy to show for their efforts, and can hold their heads high in spite of their efforts.

Meanwhile, after 161 days since the last time they played a game that had meaning in their home, the World F. Champion Philadelphia Phillies will wear gold-trimmed uniforms tonight as they begin their defense of their title at home against the Atlanta Braves (Derek Lowe vs. Brett Myers, ESPN2, 8 PM US EDT).  Holding the honors of a Sunday only package gave me an opportunity to be in a lottery for the right to buy a ticket to Opening Night (adjective, not a brand name) which I won.  I also entered for non-season ticket holders, but I lost out, but that's different.  I will be there in person to watch a flag rise above Citizens Bank "Chan Ho" Park in person with the words "2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS" on it.

Hopefully, live blogging resumes tomorrow.  And BTW, because JFein didn't get his cance to fill in for that, I've given him the April 13th show to do.  The WWE's "Draft" is that night. Hey, I have to watch that, i can't do this gig full time as you know.
